Saturday May 19th is National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

This Saturday, May 19, is National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

cid:image002.png@01CD3370.0C1922A0

According to the Banyan Tree Project, HIV infections in A&PI communities are on the rise, and  stigma is a major factor:

·         Health providers believe A&PIs are “low risk” for HIV and often don’t offer testing

·         A&PIs are afraid to get tested for fear of rejection by family and community: Over one-half of Pacific Islanders and two-thirds of Asians have never been tested for HIV

·         Fear and shame associated with HIV can lead to depression and isolation, often causing people to engage in unsafe behaviors.

Join Cascade AIDS Project in helping to decrease stigma around HIV testing and increase the number of people who know their status. We will offer HIV testing at our main office, 208 SW 5th Ave Suite 800, from 10am – 4pm on Friday, May 18 and Monday, May 20. We will also have testing available for gay, bisexual and transgender men at Pivot, 209 SW 4th Av, from 5-9pm on Saturday, May 19. Testing is by suggested donation only, and no one will be turned away for inability to pay.

There will be fun giveaways from the Banyan Tree Project for those who come in for testing during those times!

Michael Anderson-Nathe, Director of Prevention and Education, said, “Growing up in a Vietnamese-American household – I know first-hand the power and influence ‘saving face’ has on many Asian communities and the need to protect family honor. This cultural concept is not inherently right or wrong, but when it has the impact of silencing how we embrace our own and other’s sexual health, it can lead to misinformation, isolation, shame, and potentially harmful behaviors. Talking about
sex, talking about HIV, getting tested, and learning your status are major steps we can all take to break this silence.”

Please help us to recognize this day by passing this information along to your members. We also have a limited number of posters available (see attached document for styles) – if you would like one to display, let us know!

The LuLu Sessions - QDoc Festival Screening

API Pride is proud to be a Community Partner with the QDoc Film Festival again this year.  We will be co-presenting a film, The LuLu Session Saturday May 19th, at 1:30pm (see details below for more details).  S. Casper Wong, the film director will be present at the screening.

Hope to see you all there!

The LuLu Sessions
Saturday, May 19th, 1:30pm
Kennedy School Theater
(5736 NE 33rd Avenue)
Tickets:  Film-only $9 general/ $7 senior/student

Presented by QDoc with community partners Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette and Asian Pacific Islander Pride

Director S. Casper Wong in attendance
http://lulusessionsfilm.com/

In this enormously compelling and tender-hearted film, director S. Casper Wong chronicles the journey she shared with her former teacher, best friend and on-again/off-again companion over the last 15 months of LuLu’s life. Armed with a predilection toward profanity, an ever-lit cigarette and a can of cheap beer, LuLu unflinchingly battles a disease she knows only far too well.
Dr. Louise Nutter, affectionately known as LuLu, is a renowned cancer researcher on the cutting edge of developing a promising anti-cancer drug. Passionate, driven and inspiring to scientific peers and students alike, LuLu is known as much for her 16-hour workdays as for her hard-living lifestyle. When she herself is diagnosed with breast cancer, LuLu remarks, “I don’t have time to do this shit,” and never allows the diagnosis to transform her spirit or shake her trademark sense of humor.
The raw self-reflection expressed at times by those experiencing breast cancer, as well by those closest to them, is all captured here. But at its core The LuLu Sessions is a completely unconventional love story--an intimate and deeply personal portrait of two people confronting a terminal illness with honesty, laughter and love.
